Traditionally, the stages of learning a second language are: (1) Casual/Conversational, (2) Proficient, (3) Fluent. The main error in second language learning is this way of categorizing it.

You can be "conversational", "proficient" or "fluent" on a verbal level alone! I have met instructors who read and write perfectly yet can not hold a smooth conversation. Their grammar is great, but there is more to languages than grammar.

Is there a better way to organize the stages of learning a second language?

A new way of looking at the stages of learning a second language:

  1. The Verbal level. Here you learn to speak and to understand. No reading; no writing.
  2. The Academic level. Here you learn to read and write. No emphasis or pressure on speaking. Mainly academic, we do not offer this here.
  3. The Full level. Here you will immerse yourself and learn all the skills. It is challenging and fun with all the benefits of learning a foreign language.

The verbal progams are fun, easy and fast. Once you master speaking in your new language, learning to read and write and perfecting your grammar will be easy and painless.

Please note that "fluency" does not help you pick which language learning program fits your goals. You can achieve fluency whether you just want to speak fluently, or whether you want to be able to read and write fluently, too. It just takes an extra step at the end.

If money is no object, and you desire full fluent mastery, then follow these steps:

  • Complete Level 1 -- the verbal progams are fun, easy and fast. Once you master speaking in your new language, learning to read and write and perfecting your grammar will be simple and painless.
  • Skip Level 2 -- this one is for schools, colleges, universities.
  • Complete Level 3 -- starting from the beginning program will reinforce all your foundational skills, and progress you to the next level.
  • Optional -- this is only if you want to become a Native Speaker!
Please note that I did not create these programs. I have used them and others, so I can offer you only the best in each category. If a language learning program is not on here, it is because it is not as good as these.
